“You took away her worth, her privacy, her energy, her time, her safety, her intimacy, her confidence, her own voice, until now”
Crimes against women are amongst some serious problems that are prevalent in India and worldwide. Women are now prone to sexual assaults, sexual harassment, and rapes every day. They have become vulnerable to such misdeeds. India recorded an average of 87 rape cases daily in 2019 and overall 4,05,861 cases of crime against women during the year, a rise of over 7% from 2018, the latest government data released on September 29, 2020. And mind you, these are the dates only from the registered cases, when thousands of cases also go unregistered.
Every morning, our cell buzzes with some of the other headlines relating to the disparaging modesty of the several women out there. Lately, news has flashed stating how the Alhar district of Rajasthan has emerged as the hotspot for crime against women. Moreover, how a woman was gang-raped for 9 days in Haryana and on similar lines, many more.
The issue is extremely grave and needs to a forthwith addressed. We need to scrutinize this without any further delay. As the situation is really going out of our hands, we can’t just be blindfolded and sit in our places. Are the laws not adequate or the lawmakers aren’t aware of the consequences? We have to stop the blame game right away saying that the female dresses are too revealing or erotic. We need to remember and remind ourselves daily that it could be our mother, our wife, our sister or our girlfriend, the next victim.
